2007 user levels

I only have a limited knowledge but have previously developed a number of
relational databases using Access that have worked very well.

If user level access has been removed in 2007 how do i stop some users
accessing confidential data, while still allowing them to use other parts of
the database.

The data base will run on a simple pier to pier network, with one machine
holding data and Access installed on all machines, so do not have MS Server.

please help

User level security is supported in access 2007 if you use the mdb format.

If you convert the mdb file to a accDB file, then you don't have ULS.

So, assuming you been using this feature, it still is available for your
application(s) that has security setup. You are free to create and use mdb
files in 2007, so in this way ULS is supported and will continue to work in
2007.

It not quite clear if you been using ULS in the past or not.

Keep in mind that ULS security was ONLY down to the object level. So, you
would have not used ULS to prevent users from looking at particular records
in an table, but would have used ULS to prevent the user from even opening
that table in the first place..

Since ULS is file based, nothing would prevent the user(s) from making a
copy of that file to their USB jump drive and walking out with the data.
(there is a number of ULS programs out there that will crack open these
files).

So, at the end of the day, ULS was really never a secure system. It not
clear how confidential the data is you are talking about. I certainly do
have several systems in use by clients where we use ULS, and in most cases
it prevents users from running sales reports and financial reports.
Mangement don't want users running those reprots, but if the users were
determined to get at this information, then I sure they could.
